About Skardu
Skardu is the administrative capital of the Baltistan region in Gilgit-Baltistan and serves as the primary base for expeditions to K2 (8,611m), the world's second highest mountain. The wide Skardu Valley, carved by the Indus River, offers a dramatic landscape of sand dunes, glacial rivers, ancient forts and high-altitude lakes. Key attractions include Shangrila Resort (Lower Kachura Lake), Satpara Lake, Deosai Plains (the world's second highest plateau), Skardu Fort and the Shigar Valley. The town is relatively large with good infrastructure — a product of its importance as an expedition gateway.
How to Get There
By air: PIA operates direct flights from Islamabad (50 minutes), subject to clear weather. By road: 14–16 hours from Islamabad via the Karakoram Highway and Jaglot, or via Babusar Pass from Naran in summer only. Road travel from Islamabad passes through Gilgit.
